A Guide to Downsizing and Preparing for a Move

Downsizing goes smoother when you start early and work room by room. Use this guide to decide what moves, what sells, what gets donated and what goes.

Start 8–12 weeks out

  • Get a floor plan of the new home and measure the rooms.
  • Decide which large furniture will actually fit.
  • Start with rooms you use least — basements, garages, attics and guest rooms.

Sort everything into four groups

  • Keep and move.
  • Give to family — set a pickup deadline.
  • Sell or donate.
  • Haul away — broken, worn-out or unwanted items.

Make moving day easier

  • Pack an essentials box: medications, chargers, documents, toiletries and a change of clothes.
  • Label boxes by room and contents on two sides.
  • Book the move and the cleanout haul-away for the same week so nothing is left behind.
